Wisconsin recently took a significant step towards transparency in political advertising by passing a law requiring disclosure of AI-generated content in political ads. The move comes amidst growing concerns about the potential influence of AI technologies on political discourse and the need to maintain the integrity of democratic processes.
The new legislation mandates that any political advertisement featuring content generated or substantially manipulated by artificial intelligence must include a disclosure stating that viewers are being exposed to AI-generated content.
Republican lawmaker Adam Neylon (R-Pewaukee) made a statement following the recent passage of AB 664.
“This act fights back against disinformation in political campaigns by requiring any audio or video communications paid for by candidates and groups trying to influence elections, to include a simple disclosure if the ad contains AI-generated content, such as a “deepfake.
Governor Tony Evers now has a task force focused on AI and deep fake content in the political realm.
This development reflects a proactive approach by Wisconsin lawmakers to address emerging challenges posed by advancements in AI technology, details are outlined by Stafford Law. With AI becoming increasingly capable of producing realistic and persuasive content, there are fears that it could be exploited to spread misinformation or manipulate public opinion, particularly in the context of political advertising.
“Some voters have become suspicious of our electoral system, and AI-generated content in political campaign ads will only serve to inflate this suspicion. AI technology is accessible, and can make it nearly impossible to distinguish between fact and fiction in advertisements. By requiring transparency in campaign communications, we can ensure Wisconsin residents remain informed,” said Neylon.
Critics of the legislation argue that it may stifle innovation and impose undue burdens on advertisers, particularly small-scale political campaigns with limited resources. Despite these concerns, proponents assert that transparency measures are essential to uphold the integrity of democratic processes and protect against the manipulation of public opinion. As AI continues to evolve and permeate various aspects of society, including political communication, there is a growing need for comprehensive regulations that address its ethical and democratic implications.
