The Wisconsin Democrats passed a pro-Palestinian resolution at their state party convention, which coincided with the daring rescue of four Israeli hostages in Gaza.
The resolution called for a ceasefire in Gaza and labeled Israel’s response to the Hamas attack on October 7 as “genocide” and “an egregious violation of humanitarian law.” Notably, the resolution failed to mention the Israelis killed or taken hostage during the attack.
Delegates at the convention approved the resolution by a vote of 136-91, while also approving a resolution condemning antisemitism. However, they struck down a line acknowledging the significant increase in antisemitic incidents since the October 7 attack.
The Milwaukee Jewish Federation condemned the Democrats’ resolutions, stating that they unfairly accuse Israel of genocide while ignoring Hamas’ violations of humanitarian law by using civilians as shields.
The controversy surrounding the resolution was further highlighted when pro-Palestinian protesters attempted to disrupt Senator Tammy Baldwin’s speech at the convention, shouting “Free Palastine.”
Despite her support for a ceasefire, Baldwin has faced criticism from pro-Palestinian groups for her stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The passage of the pro-Palestinian resolution by the Wisconsin Democrats has sparked a heated debate within the party and the broader community. The resolution’s failure to acknowledge the Israeli victims of the Hamas attack and its accusations against Israel have drawn criticism from various parties.
