Authorities have identified the man accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk as Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old Utah resident.
Law enforcement sources told the Daily Mail that Robinson was taken into custody late Thursday night in southern Utah, roughly 260 miles from where Kirk was killed during a rally at Utah Valley University in Orem.
Investigators say Robinson confessed to his father, Matt Robinson, a 27-year veteran of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. Matt Robinson reportedly contacted authorities and secured his son before police arrived to arrest him.
Robinson’s mother, Amber, works for Intermountain Support Coordination Services, a state contractor that assists disabled individuals with care. Family photos on social media show Robinson enjoying vacations and posting smiling selfies, including one celebrating his college acceptance.
The suspect was a scholarship student at Utah State University and lived with his family in a six-bedroom home valued at $600,000 in Washington, Utah. He has two younger brothers.
Authorities have not released a motive. At a press conference Thursday night, officials confirmed Robinson could face the death penalty if convicted.
The parents of Charlie Kirk’s suspected assassin are now under public scrutiny. Matt Robinson, the father, is a veteran law enforcement officer with nearly three decades in the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. His mother, Amber, works in disability care services through a state contractor. Family social media accounts highlight Robinson’s academic achievements and family trips, painting the picture of an ordinary young man whose alleged actions have now shocked the nation.
