School referendums are a contentious issue that has appeared frequently on ballots in Wisconsin. On one side, school districts argue that inflation, rising costs, and insufficient state funding leave them with no choice but to ask voters to approve additional funds through these referendums. This is particularly true in times of economic strain, as schools need to maintain buildings, modernize facilities, and offer essential services like student support programs.
On the other side, these referendums come with a price—higher property taxes. Voters are often faced with the reality that approving these measures means increasing their financial burden. Critics of school referendums argue that administrative spending in school districts has ballooned beyond reason, often outpacing the growth of teacher salaries and student enrollment. They call for greater fiscal responsibility, especially given the rapid rise in non-instructional expenses, which can erode trust in how districts manage taxpayer money. Opponents also highlight that school districts mislead voters on the actual costs of school referendums and that they often have more cost on property taxpayers than the school district leads them to believe.
As voters weigh these referendums, they must consider both perspectives: the need for schools to keep up with costs and the implications for their own wallets. Below is a comprehensive list of the school referendums appearing on the November 5, 2024 ballot.
