Wisconsin’s political landscape dramatically shifts as businessman Eric Hovde closes in on liberal U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin. Baldwin’s alignment with President Joe Biden’s policies, coupled with her recent endorsement of a “permanent ceasefire” in Gaza, has galvanized Hovde’s campaign, bringing him within striking distance of the incumbent.
Fresh data from a recent Emerson College poll, released on March 21, paints a compelling picture of the tightening race. Notably, the poll reveals that former President Donald Trump is leading Biden in the pivotal swing state of Wisconsin.
“Baldwin 45%, Hovde 42%,” Emerson College reported, emphasizing the razor-thin margin separating the candidates. With the poll’s margin of error standing at 3 percent, the contest is undeniably neck and neck.
In February, Baldwin held a more comfortable lead of 7 percent, underscoring the rapid momentum shift as scrutiny mounts over her liberal record. From her stance on Gaza to immigration and the economy, Baldwin’s positions are under intense examination, propelling Hovde’s surge in popularity.
The breakdown of voter demographics sheds further light on the evolving dynamics of the race. Women voters appear to lean towards Baldwin by a margin of 50% to 36%, while men show a preference for Hovde at 49% to 40%. Meanwhile, independent voters tilt slightly towards Baldwin over Hovde, with a margin of 41% to 36%.
The issues that matter most to Wisconsinites also play a pivotal role in shaping their electoral preferences. The economy takes center stage, with 35% of voters prioritizing this issue, followed by healthcare (11%), immigration (10%), threats to democracy (10%), education (9%), housing affordability (9%), abortion access (8%), and crime (6%).
In a notable development, Senator Baldwin’s recent expression of support for a “permanent ceasefire” in Gaza has stirred both backlash and praise. This endorsement comes in the wake of pressure from leftist activists advocating for policies that would limit Israel’s ability to defend itself against Hamas terrorism, including the horrific attacks targeting Israeli civilians.
Trump’s resurgence in Wisconsin further underscores the changing political landscape. The Emerson College Polling/The Hill survey reveals Trump garnering 46% support compared to Biden’s 43% in the 2024 presidential election, with 11% of voters undecided. Accounting for undecided voters, Trump’s lead expands to 52%, with Biden trailing at 48%.
The evolving sentiments among independent voters signal a shift in the electorate. With Biden trailing by 1% in Wisconsin back in November 2023, according to the Emerson poll, the race remains fluid, with independents split between the two candidates.
Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, highlights the significance of independent voters in shaping the outcome: “The race tightens among independents when undecideds are pushed: 51% overall support Biden, 49% Trump.”
As Wisconsin gears up for a closely contested race, the momentum behind Eric Hovde’s campaign signals a potential shakeup in the state’s political landscape, challenging the status quo and amplifying the voices of conservative voters.
