AI Critics Secretly Bankrolled Newsroom Coverage to Skew Public Perception

A quiet dispute over who pays for journalism has turned into a public fault line in the media’s coverage of artificial intelligence.

The tension surfaced after NBC News reported last month that OpenAI had issued legal threats against nonprofits critical of its work. OpenAI did not object to the reporting itself. Instead, it raised concerns about the funding behind it, noting that the reporter participated in a fellowship backed by the Tarbell Center for AI Journalism.

OpenAI pointed out that Tarbell receives funding from organizations including the Future of Life Institute, which warns about AI risks and was cited in the NBC story. NBC later added a disclosure noting the connection. Similar fellowships have placed reporters at outlets such as Bloomberg, Time, The Verge, and the Los Angeles Times, as reported by Semafor.

The episode reflects a broader struggle inside tech and politics. Accelerationists—investors and developers pushing rapid AI deployment—are increasingly clashing with safety-focused groups often linked to effective altruism. That divide has played out inside OpenAI itself, where co-founders aligned with safety efforts unsuccessfully tried to remove CEO Sam Altman, and in Washington, where Donald Trump shifted federal policy toward a more industry-friendly approach.

If judged based on consumer adoption, AI chatbots are the most popular technology ever. If judged based on poll numbers, they are the least popular. How to explain this?

A big part of it is the Doomer Industrial Complex — hundreds of astroturfed organizations that have spread…

Media coverage has become a key battleground. OpenAI has taken a more confrontational posture toward critics and journalists, a contrast some observers note when comparing Altman’s 2021 interview with Ezra Klein of the New York Times to his recent appearance on the Times’ Hard Fork podcast. The company has also expanded its political operation, hiring veteran Democratic and Republican operatives to influence state and federal policy.

On the other side, safety-aligned groups have faced scrutiny of their own. Politico reported that the Horizon Institute for Public Service, linked to Open Philanthropy, funded AI fellows in Senate offices. Open Philanthropy—founded to manage the wealth of Dustin Moskovitz and Cari Tuna—has since rebranded as Coefficient Giving and hired additional communications staff.

Tarbell’s leadership says the criticism underscores its purpose. “The Tarbell Center exists to support rigorous and independent accountability journalism,” executive director Cillian Crosson said, adding that the organization maintains “a strict firewall between our funding and our fellows’ editorial output.”

A media executive at an outlet that has worked with Tarbell put it more bluntly: “I do think this is just OpenAI looking for a conspiracy, instead of inward.” (RELATED: Baldwin and Van Orden Team Up on Bipartisan Bill to Support Organic Farmers)

As newsrooms grapple with shrinking budgets, fellowship programs have become harder to resist. But the debate highlights a growing question for editors and readers alike: how funding transparency, ideology, and access intersect in coverage of one of the most powerful technologies of the decade.
