Trump Highlights Immigration, Economy in State of the Union Address

Tuesday’s State of the Union address before Congress highlighted the accomplishments and challenges faced by the Trump administration more than one year after taking office.

President Donald Trump opened his address stating, “Our nation is back bigger, better, richer and stronger than ever before,” contrasting the state of our country with the “inherited nation in crisis.” He quickly illustrated past difficulties in filling military and law enforcement roles and claimed that the United States military and police were “stacked”.

The president pivoted to various talking points including the admission of zero illegal aliens since he took office, the stock market setting more than 50 records, and the ex-U.S. investment into the United States. He took multiple opportunities to discuss the price of gas and increased oil production, referencing his promise to “drill baby drill”. President Trump also touched on the over two million Americans now off of food stamps.

The president took a moment to celebrate the nation’s wins at the Winter Olympics and he welcomed the men’s Olympic hockey team into the room. The team arrived wearing their gold medals and received enthusiastic clapping from a room chanting “U-S-A”.

Among the other invited guests of the evening, Trump called attention to one guest in attendance, Megan, whose family will benefit from the One Big Beautiful Bill. The president spoke about how her family will benefit from the new no-tax-on-tips policy as well as the expanded child tax credit which he stated would put $5,000 back in her pocket. Trump then highlighted the new TRUMP accounts program which was also established under the One Big Beautiful Bill. The president praised the Dell family for its commitment to support 25 million children participating in TRUMP accounts through a private donation.

Pointing at the crowd in front of him, the president spoke about what he called the “unaffordable care act” and addressed the profits earned by insurance companies as a result of the bill. He then took time to address changes made by his administration to advance price transparency and bring down the cost of prescription drugs for Americans. He repeatedly stated that Americans pay the highest prices of anyone in the world for prescription drugs and urged Americans to visit Trumprx.com to learn more about this program.

The president later spent time addressing the corruption in Minnesota and spoke about what he called the $19 billion dollars “stolen from American taxpayers”. He then announced what he called the “War on Fraud”, an initiative which will be led by Vice President JD Vance in Minnesota and other states. (RELATED: Higher Spending Yields Worse Results in Wisconsin Education)

Illegal immigration and criminal activities committed by illegal immigrants was a large theme of the address. Among the youngest guests in attendance was Dalilah Coleman, a first-grader who was injured in a car accident caused by an illegal alien driving a semitruck with a CDL. The President announced the Dalilah Law, named in her honor. Dalilah’s Law would bar commercial licenses for illegal aliens like the one who caused Dalilah’s accident. In a post to Instagram, the White House described her injuries as a traumatic brain injury and Cerebral Palsy meaning she is in need of lifelong care and therapy.

Shortly after the president promoted the SAVE America act aimed at stopping illegal aliens from voting. The president stated that those who oppose election integrity are intent on cheating, and called it “very simple: All voters must show voter ID.” He also detailed a reduction in the availability of mail-in ballots for some individuals.

Trump then shifted focus to the issues of law and order, America’s armed forces, and he spent considerable time detailing the accomplishments of many service members. The president paid homage to Iryna Zarutska and Charlie Kirk who were murdered within weeks of each other. Iryna’s parents were present and visibly emotional as well as Charlie’s widow, Erika Kirk, who sat beside Zarutska’s parents. The president spoke about rejecting political violence of any kind and pointed to the rise in faith among the American people. He then followed those remarks asking Congress to pass tough legislation for violent repeat offenders like the man who killed Iryna Zarutska.

Several individuals including Captain Royce Williams, pictured below, were awarded military distinction during the address. The president also took an opportunity to address his hand in ending eight wars since he took office. Bipartisan praise for the president came after the announcement of the complete return of living and dead hostages from the war in Gaza. The president dedicated much of his State of the Union address to different facets of illegal immigration and the affordability challenges facing Americans struggling to pay for healthcare and pursue homeownership. While met with vocal opposition from members of Congress in attendance and those who participated in a counterevent, highlights from the evening include the many distinguished service members present and the medal recipients honored for their contributions to the country.
