Senate Democrats have diverted from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s political theatre and have begun to align their votes with Republican officials to keep the government’s lights on.
Despite Schumer’s remarks that he does “not” want to give President Donald Trump “a license to play politics with people’s livelihoods,” he is actively doing so by striking down legislation to prevent the shut down and stopping American’s from receiving paychecks.
According to economists, the shutdown will cost the economy over $14 billion. Furloughed workers have lined up at food banks, less money has circulated the economy, the job market has entered a “low fire, low hire” phase, and the value of the U.S. Dollar has continuously declined, which foreshadows a sharp rise in inflation.
As of late, one of the largest federal unions in the country has called on Democrats to drop the act and fund the government.
Some Democrats have now begun to do so. (RELATED: Anti-Free Speech Cases Earn Big Win in SLAPP Lawsuits Thanks To GOP Legislators)
Although legislation to pay America’s military during the Schumer Shutdown fell short of six votes, members under Schumer’s control— Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), Sen. John Ossoff (D-GA) and Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA)— voted in favor of the Republican led resolution.
As a result, over 1.3 million service members will now miss another paycheck tomorrow.
Even though Sen. Ron Johnson’s (R-WI) legislation would have aided active duty military members currently deployed across the country and beyond securing America’s borders with a paycheck, those loyal to Schumer’s demands voted against the proposal because they would have rather supported a similar bill proposed by Sen. Chris Von Hollen (D-NJ) instead.
In the original continuing resolution, Fetterman and his colleague Sen. Catherine Coztez-Mazto (D-NV) voted alongside Republican senators to keep the government open. Sen. August King (I-MA) voted with the two democrats as well.
Now, other top Senate Democrats such as Sen. Mark Werner (D-VA) and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), and Democrat affiliated Sen. Bernie Sanders (IN-VM), have begun to consider Republican proposals.
“It’s something we’ll take a close look at. I think if we could get it right, it’s something that would get a lot of support,” Werner said after Thune offered to once again introduce legislation that would pay federal workers.
“Clearly, we need to get the government reopened,” Warner added. (RELATED: Wisconsin Judge Unlawfully Joins Partisan Anti-Trump Protest)
Sen. Von-Hollen already stated he supports legislation to pay government workers during the time of the shutdown, and Sanders told reporters he would be looking into the details of the resolution, but did not discard the possibility of throwing his support behind it.
Americans, regardless of the party, have made it clear; the pain American families have undergone is going to come to an end, and hopefully that is sooner rather than later.
