An active threat to life alarm at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater was issued and subsequently cancelled in a situation that is still developing.
Just after 11:00 this morning, UW-Whitewater police issued a warning to campus that there was an active shooter on campus with a legitimate threat to life. The campus issued a formal warning stating, “there is an active threat to life safety on the Whitewater campus, RUN, HIDE, FIGHT!” UW-Whitewater Rock County and UW-Madison were not affected by this incident. As reports come in, UW-Whitewater and Whitewater police are saying there was no active threat to life when the alarm was issued. The total length of the warning was about a half hour while police helped clear campus buildings. UW-Whitewater placed a request to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office for assistance as they said the event was occurring in the “University Center,” the institution’s student union.
About a half hour later UW-Whitewater sent out a text through their emergency reporting system that there was no longer a threat to life. They also said police have established there was no legitimate prior threat to life.
In an email alert sent to students that was obtained by True North News, the University claimed that an individual was stopped by police matching the description of the believed active shooter, and found no weapons were found on their person.
“Police were later able to find the person who matched the individual’s description and concluded that there was no weapon and determined there was no threat”, the text message read.
