After a withdrawal earlier this month, David Crowley is re-entering the Wisconsin Gubernatorial race with a candidate’s recent withdrawal.
Earlier this month, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley ended his campaign, after realizing that he won’t become the state’s democratic nominee. When Crowley dropped out, he endorsed Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez, who was in the middle of a financial scandal and needed support. However, no more than two weeks later, Rodriguez fired her campaign manager and ended up withdrawing from the race as well. The same day Rodriguez suspended her campaign, Crowley posted on X stating that he will be making a “big announcement” tomorrow in Milwaukee. Crowley also said in an interview, “Now that the candidate I endorsed, who always had the best pathway, is no longer there, I think it’s extremely important to answer the call.”
This comes after three high level Democratic officials said they had a “very real conversation” about Crowley re-entering earlier this week. Likely because officials have been concerned about Socialist Francesca Hong’s chances versus GOP candidate Rep. Tom Tiffany in the general election.
Since the beginning, polls have been showing Hong and Mandela Barnes, failed 2022 Senate candidate, to be leading the polls. However, recent reports have shown that Mandela Barnes doesn’t have the full support of the Wisconsin Democratic Officials, nor does Hong. At the Wispolitics Straw Poll during the Democratic Convention in Madison, Sara Rodriguez also came out on top. This leaves three candidates, one now withdrawn, that no longer have support from party officials, but have support from the base. Crowley reportedly had more than $315,000 in usable campaign funds, less than $100,000 behind Francesca Hong. Crowley re-entrance, has also earned an endorsement from Governor Tony Evers. Crowley says that Evers endorsement “reflects his confidence that I have the experience, the judgment, and the record to build the coalition we need, defeat Tom Tiffany, and lead effectively from the very first day in office.”
