The Department of Homeland Security has identified roughly 256,000 potential noncitizens on voter rolls in California, Nevada, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin wrote to top election officials in the four states that there were potential noncitizens in their rolls. The federal findings have been disputed by several state officials. The New Jersey Governor said this week that 6,600 noncitizens were registered at the state’s motor vehicles department. However, the DHS found as many as 35,152 noncitizens registered to vote.
In California, DHS found 190,832 noncitizens were on its voter rolls. They also found 15,903 noncitizens registered to vote in Nevada, and as many as 14,576 noncitizens registered to vote in Pennsylvania. Nevada and Pennsylvania were key swing states that went to Trump in 2024, and Biden in 2020. (RELATED:Bryan Steil Faces Shrinking Democratic Field in Wisconsin’s 1st District)
Mullin wrote letters to the Secretaries of State of all four states to address the concern. “I hope that you share in the commitment to ensure that only U.S. citizens participate in our federal elections,” the letters from Mullin said. “Allowing just one non-citizen to vote cancels the vote of one U.S. citizen. States are responsible for voter registration.”
In 2024, Wisconsin approved a constitutional amendment limiting voting in federal, state, and local elections to only U.S. citizens. Wisconsin democrats are also requesting that ballots be returned to mail in voters after the Democrat field experienced significant changes once the ballots were sent out and submitted. Across the country, 25 other states have partially cross-checked over 68 million voter registration records through the SAVE database. The SAVE database is an online service for registered federal, state, territorial, tribal, and local government agencies to verify immigration status and U.S. citizenship of applicants seeking benefits, licenses, or in this case, voter registration. So far, those states have found over 28,000 non citizens registered to vote.
