On Tuesday, a city of Milwaukee Police Officer was injured and a suspect was killed after a vehicle pursuit turned into gun fire.
Milwaukee Police spotted a vehicle near North 39th St. and West Meinecke Ave. that matched the description of a vehicle that is wanted in connection with a shots-fired incident in Glendale. When the officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver took off leading to a vehicle pursuit.
The driver eventually stopped near the corner of North 37th and West Wright St. where two suspects then fled on foot. One officer reportedly pursued one suspect for a block, repeatedly ordering them to get on the ground. (RELATED:Active Shooter Alert Issued, Then Cancelled at UW-Whitewater)
After the pursuit, gun fire then exchanged. Police said the 23-year-old suspect died on scene despite life saving efforts. Investigators said a firearm was found in his hand, another was recovered from his waistband, and there was a third located in the vehicle. The officer was 35 years-old with more than three years of service on MPD. He was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and was later released. The second suspect remains at large.
Residents have described the area where this took place as a “war zone,” with one neighbor saying children can no longer safely play outside. Over the month of August, crime continued to rise as homicides increased and overall burglary and theft also rose. On August first, Milwaukee was experiencing a 30% decrease in homicides. By the end of the month, Milwaukee is now on track for a 23% year by year decrease. In the first quarter of 2026, MPD reported that burglary was up from 401 cases in 2025, to 404 in 2026. Theft, excluding auto theft, was also up to 1560 incidents, 100 more than 2025 levels.
